Every human is endowed with God-given talents which can be used productively to accomplish work. We have discovered that the universe of work can be simplified through the catagorization of the lifecycle of work's phases into six different components that we call Zones. Each Zone is necessary for the accomplishment of any complex business or social objective. Each of us has at least one Zone where the power and edge of our talents are visibly evident, and where the actual work occurring in that Zone feels more like FUN than WORK. These activities give us energy, pleasure, and sometimes even joy. We call these our PowerZones. The next type Zone type to consider is what we call a FrustrationZone, which consists predominantly of activities that rob us of joy and energy. And because we lack the innate talents required for proficiency in this zone, we tend to quickly devolve into a source of frustration for our team mates, partners, or customers if we spend much time executing the tasks involved in one of our FrustrationZones. We refer to the third and nal Zone type as a CompetencyZone, as it consists of activities that neither feed nor drain us and which we can do fairly well for a limited period of time.
